Broken Every Bone
This is a ballad for the good times
And all the dignity we had
Don't get het up on the evil things
You ain't coming back
You can be with me
If you wanna be
You can be with me
I'd forgotten just how utterly, utterly brilliant this song is.

Epic Music was Epic

Yesterday was A Good Day. Or more specifically, last night was A Good Night. Not because anything special happened, but because it just was. This was proved by the fact that I was smiling so manically that I scared my flatmate.
I haven't felt like that in ages. And it was all thanks to Northern Line by Yeti. It made me ridiculously happy and reminded me of Lidia and fairylights and evenings spent in the dark with great music on loud. So that's what I did. Angelitos Negros and World in Union 95 and Samson and Braille and Swing Low Sweet Chariot. And fairylights and tea and cake (thanks to Olivia's mum).
My face hurt from smiling but it was wonderful. A Good Night. And nothing much happened at all.

Of Alice in Wonderland
A boat, beneath a sunny sky,
Lingering onward dreamily
In an evening of July;
Children three that nestle near,
Eager eye and willing ear,
Pleased a simple tale to hear;—
Long has paled that sunny sky:
Echoes fade and memories die,
Autumn frosts have slain July.
Still she haunts me, phantom-wise,
Alice moving under skies
Never seen by waking eyes.
Children yet, the tale to hear,
Eager eye and willing ear,
Lovingly shall nestle near.
In a Wonderland they lie,
Dreaming as the days go by,
Dreaming as the summers die:
Ever drifting down the stream,
Lingering in the golden gleam,-
Life, what is it but a dream?
Lingering onward dreamily
In an evening of July;
Children three that nestle near,
Eager eye and willing ear,
Pleased a simple tale to hear;—
Long has paled that sunny sky:
Echoes fade and memories die,
Autumn frosts have slain July.
Still she haunts me, phantom-wise,
Alice moving under skies
Never seen by waking eyes.
Children yet, the tale to hear,
Eager eye and willing ear,
Lovingly shall nestle near.
In a Wonderland they lie,
Dreaming as the days go by,
Dreaming as the summers die:
Ever drifting down the stream,
Lingering in the golden gleam,-
Life, what is it but a dream?

Samwise the Brave
"I can't do this Sam"
"I know, it's all wrong. By rights we shouldn't even be here. But we are... It's like in the great stories, Mr Frodo. The ones that really mattered. Full of darkness and danger they were. And sometimes you didn't want to know the end, because how could the end be happy? How could the world go back to the way it was when so much bad had happened? But in the end it's only a passing thing, this shadow. Even darkness must pass. A new day will come. And when the sun shines it will shine out the clearer. Those were the stories that stayed with you. That meant something. Even if you were too small to understand why. But I think, Mr Frodo, I do understand. I know now. Folk in those stories had lots of chances of turning back only they didn't. Because they were holding on to something."
"What are we holding onto Sam?"
"That there's some good in this world, Mr Frodo. And it's worth fighting for."

Darling is this Love?

Sit with me a while
And let me listen to you talk about
your dreams and your obsessions
I'll be quiet and confessional
The violets explode inside me
when I meet your eyes
Then I'm spinning and I'm diving
Like a cloud of starlings
Darling is this love?
Elbow - Starlings

Still Tainted with Red
the day that we
took out a car in the rain
is the day you forgot how to brake and see
how quickly the picture will change
filled with fingers and voices and teeth
i still remember holding my hand
against your face just before it was sprayed
across the radio
as it played
Emmy the Great - MIA
My favourtie song about a car crash. Which is an odd thing to say, but it is very good.

I'll Come Back
It started out as a feeling
Which then grew into a hope
Which then turned into a quiet thought
Which then turned into a quiet word
And then that word grew louder and louder
'Til it was a battle cry
I'll come back
When you call me
No need to say goodbye

Love Poem
...for Friday the 13th:
You remind me
Define me
Incline me
If you died
I'd
Found in the National Portrait Gallery.
I can't remember who it was by.

Incline me
If you died

"Where there's life, there's hope"
Though here at journey's end I lie
in darkness buried deep,
beyond all towers strong and high,
beyond all mountains steep,
above all shadows rides the Sun
and Stars for ever dwell:
I will not say the Day is done,
nor bid the Stars farewell.
in darkness buried deep,
beyond all towers strong and high,
beyond all mountains steep,
above all shadows rides the Sun
and Stars for ever dwell:
I will not say the Day is done,
nor bid the Stars farewell.

Into the West
Lay down,
your sweet and weary head.
Night is falling.
You have come to journey’s end.
Sleep now, and dream
of the ones who came before.
They are calling,
from across a distant shore.
Why do you weep?
What are these tears upon your face?
Soon you will see.
All of your fears will pass away.
Safe in my arms,
you’re only sleeping.
What can you see,
on the horizon?
Why do the white gulls call?
Across the sea,
a pale moon rises.
The ships have come,
to carry you home.
And all will turn,
to silver glass.
A light on the water.
All souls pass.
Hope fades,
Into the world of night.
Through shadows falling,
Out of memory and time.
Don’t say,
We have come now to the end.
White shores are calling.
You and I will meet again.
And you’ll be here in my arms,
Just sleeping.
What can you see,
on the horizon?
Why do the white gulls call?
Across the sea,
a pale moon rises.
The ships have come,
to carry you home.
And all will turn,
to silver glass.
A light on the water.
Grey ships pass
Into the West.
your sweet and weary head.

I Believe In You And Me
Someone on or above the earth, tell me why on earth, does she beg of love at the feet of men who snatch hers from her, selling it on to themselves at a profit that can’t possibly reflect its worth.
This is always ungentle robbery, is not a plot of lust, because she is very conscious of her select few lovers, particularly in relation to her gains, to her own sexual harvest.
The answer, in vague and uncertain terms, lies somewhere in the shaded area shaped quadrangle by the lines that don’t quite connect the picture of a father, the part of her soul that freezes at the touch of warmth, the tattered feminist beginners handbook, the lampshade and the bloody gate that she gazes at monthly, that she once made me taste, that stains her desire for progress.
But desire tarnished; twisted, perverse desire, does not have any implications for the progress itself. And so, progressively, her questions become more stupid. Hand in the fire stupid, eating broken glass stupid, forgetting that you don’t like pain stupid. Stupid then and stupid when, on a terribly, deadly sunny day comes the most ridiculous, nauseous, frustratingly stupid question of them all.
On the wall high above the graffiti of all the things I could never bring myself to say, she turned to me just as the sun turned away and (thinking, in her stupidity, that it couldn’t see or hear us) asked: ‘Will you love me forever?’
‘Of course not’, I said.
